The British Embassy to China, 1793-1794, ‘Western Images of China & Japan,’ World History MA, Birkbeck College, University of London, 15 May 2014. An illustrated presentation about the first British Embassy to China, looking at cross-cultural interactions, artistic records and representations of the embassy as seen by its official artists, and how it was reported on and received in Britain at the time, as well as relating the embassy to present-day official initiatives in ‘cultural diplomacy’ between Britain and China in the form of arts collaborations and exhibitions between Chinese and British museums.
